Let’s all say what we’re thinking…small closets are kind of the worst. Whether you live in a big city apartment, or a home that has little closet space, you’re probably in need of any closet organization hacks you can get!
We all dream of having a luxuriously large closet that has enough space for all our outerwear, shoes, and accessories, however, it’s not realistic for most people. If you’re like us before we organized our closet, you are lucky to have enough space to hook all your hangers and your shoes are in piles on top of one another.
While a larger closet would be nice, who says you can’t make your small closet Pinterest worthy? It may be overwhelming to start the decluttering process and get your items organized, but these 10 closet organization hacks are super simple to do and will transform your closet.
You may just realize that you have more space than you thought possible!
10 Super Simple Closet Organization Hacks for Small Closets
Hack 1: Add Sleek, Clear Shoe Storage
Are your shoes piled high in your closet, or just jumbled around on the floor? Small closets already have limited space, so your pile of shoes are crowding it even more. That’s where shoe storage comes in.
Storing your shoes in clear storage boxes or tiered shelves is great way to eliminate shoe clutter. Each pair of shoes have their own “home” to go back to at the end of the day. We love the acrylic shoe boxes. They are super sleek.
Once your shoes are off the ground and organized neatly, you’ll be surprised at how much space your shoes were actually taking up!
Hack 2: Label Baskets for Quick Access
Labeled baskets are the way to go when organizing your closet. Again, we love acrylic items because it opens up your space and has such a classy look. You are also able to see what’s inside each bin with acrylic items.
We like to label the bins we don’t need to pull items from often. Some of those bins may be seasonal items that we would want to store on higher shelves or extra t-shirts that we don’t wear frequently.
How you label your bins and baskets is ultimately up to you and your needs. However, if you need some ideas of different types of labels for your bins, here are some examples:

Hack 3: Make Your Closet Aesthetically Pleasing

The closet shown above is the perfect example of a neutral color palette design. They chose tan woven baskets to store miscellaneous items up top and clean, white hangers to hang their clothes. Underneath the hanging clothes are white bins and a shelving unit to keep the closet looking clean. When designing an aesthetically pleasing closet, think of what type of look you want to carry into your closet. Would you want a colorful closet? A bright and airy closet with acrylic bins? Or a more neutral themed closet with warm tones?
If you decide to choose a color, you can still use the example above but make these changes:
- Choose a color you would like to use in your closet (for example, light pink)
- Change the bins on the top shelf with pink colored bins.
- Instead of white hangers, buy pink felt hangers
- You can even swap the laundry baskets with ones that feature your chosen color
Hack 4: Use Matching Hangers

Hack 5: Storage Drawers Creates Functional Space
When organizing your closet, you may find that you have some extra space below your hanging clothes. If you find this as a dilemma, try fitting storage drawers in the empty space.

Although we don’t like the look of hanging door storage, it’s sometimes a necessity with smaller closets. Hanging door storage adds opportunities for storage where there were none before, which can be quite a transformation.

One of our favorite ways to organize our sweaters and jeans in our closet is with a hanging unit. Hanging units are such a great way to stack sweaters, jeans and other clothing items to easily see and grab your outfit of the day.
Hanging units are such an affordable way to make a change in your closet. You will be surprised by how much vertical space is used by installing one of these in your closet. If we had more room in our closet, we would buy a couple more because they are so functional and practical.
Hack 10: Style Clothes Outside of Closet
So, you’ve organized your small closet and you’re still wondering how you still don’t have room for all your clothes. A great way to add additional “closet space” is putting a clothing rack in your bedroom.
Not only is it a great way to showcase some seasonal items, but it gives you room to store them in a separate space. Take some inspiration from the image above.
