Living in small apartment in the city, we understand not having enough space for all your clothes (especially for bulkier clothes in the winter). The key to organizing your sweaters in your closet to be smart with your space.

It may just be us, but one of our favorite and most satisfying things to do in life is to organize. Every year when the seasons change, we feel the urge to refresh our space, and organizing our fall clothes is always so fun.

However, it can get overwhelming if you have a lot of clothes to sort though. We can sometimes feel this way when clothing items begin to pile up during the process, but that’s why we’re here!

We love making organization simple and maintainable. When your life is organized, you have more space to create and live!

4 Things to Think About When Your Organizing Your Fall Clothes

1. How Much Space Do You Have?

You’re most likely here because you’re working with a small closet space. When deciding how to organize your small closet, consider the storage space you have.

In our small closet, we have one shelf unit, one hanging rack and one shelf above it. We are working with minimal space, so we have to consider several different ways to store our clothes. 

First, decide on the space you want to store your sweaters. This will give you an idea of how much space you have to work with.

2. How Many Sweaters Do You Have to Store?

This goes hand-in-hand with the amount of space you have to work with. You also have to consider how many sweaters you have to store. 

Just because you have a smaller closet doesn’t mean you can’t organize all your sweaters. You’ll be surprised with how much space you can gain by organizing your clothes in a smart way!

3. Think About the Budget You Have

You’ll also want to consider how much money you are wanting to spend. Your budget will determine what type of products you are willing to buy.

You can find some cheaper, and durable organization options on Amazon, Target and Walmart.

If you have a larger budget, The Container Store is more expensive, but is always a great option for find more specific organization and storage options.

4. What Baskets, Bins or Materials Do You Need?

Once you have an idea of how much space you have to organize your sweaters, know how many clothes you have to store, and know your budget, it’s time to make a plan!

We recommend making measuring your space to decide the size of baskets, bins or shelves you will need for your equipment.

Once you have a plan, you’re ready to shop and organize your space.

3 Sweater Storage Ideas for a Small Closet

Keeping all the things above in mind, here are 3 sweater storage ideas you can recreate in your space.

1. Acrylic Dividers 

How genius is this hack? It’s such an elegant and beautiful way to organize your clothes. It’s amazing how these acrylic dividers keep the space open and airy, while defining a section for specific types of clothing and accessories.

These dividers simply latch on the the shelf and stay in place. It’s a simple and inexpensive way to make a big transformation in your closet.

Once they are installed, simply fold your sweaters sand stack them vertically to make the best use of the space.

2. Basket Storage

Another great storage solution to keep your sweaters organized is to use baskets! Baskets are great to slide on and off of shelves as you use the sweaters.

If we’re using baskets that aren’t transparent, we always label them with the item that is in the basket. In this case, it would be labeled “sweaters”.

3. Mix and Match Organization 

If you’re looking to do a total revamp of your closet this fall, mixing and matching organization ideas is a great way to organize your sweaters and other fall essentials.

For the sweaters you wear most often during the cooler months, we recommend hanging those on velvet hangers. Since these are the items you will be wearing more than others, these are the ones that need to be easily accessible.

On your shelves, woven baskets are a great storage solution for other sweaters, scarves and tops you have. This is a great way to fully maximize your small closet and make the most of the space you have!
