Calzone Dough:
  • All-Purpose Flour: We aways recommend using unbleached all-purpose flour for baking recipes.
  • Yeast: We love using quick-rise yeast when making any type of dough. It makes the process go a lot fast — cutting down about half the wait time for rising and proofing dough.
  • Salt: A bit of salt is added to the dough for flavor.
  • Sugar: Sugar is also added to the dough for flavor and help to activate the yeast as the dough rises and bakes.
  • Italian Seasoning: The Italian seasoning in the dough adds a delicious flavor to every bite.
  • Olive Oil: Olive oil adds moisture to the dough and it prevents the pizza suace from absorbing into the dough.
The “Insides”:
  • Pizza Sauce: Easier is better, so store bought pizza sauce is the way to go.
  • Mozzarella and Cheddar Cheese: A mixture of mozzarella and cheddar cheese is so delicious. If you prefer another type of cheese, feel free to add that inside as well.
  • Pepperoni: To make multiple pieces of pepperoni fit inside the mini heart-shaped calzones, we cut the pepperoni slices into quarters.

How do you shape the calzones?

Wondering how to get the adorable heart shape in your calzones?

It’s super simple! All you need is a rolling pin and a heart-shaped cookie cutter.

Simply roll out your dough a quart inch thin and then use the heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the dough into the shapes.

If you find the dough shrinking after your cut it, simply use your fingers to pull it out, while still keeping the shape of the heart as you do.

Directions Snapshot:

First things first, you’ll need to prep your dough. You can either make the dough homemade (see our recipe below for out dough recipe) or purchase your favorite premade dough or pizza dough mix from your local grocery store.

Once the dough is ready, preheat your oven to 425°F.

Roll out your dough 1/4 inch thick. Use your heart-shape cookie cutter to cut the dough into multiple heart shapes. Make as many hearts with the dough as you can. **Our dough recipe made 12 mini calzones.

How to Assemble the Calzones:

On one heart, add some pizza sauce in the middle, leaving an edge around the dough that doesn’t have sauce.

Add cheese, pepperoni and any other “toppings” you want inside your calzone. Brush the edge of the dough with a bit of water.

Place another heart-shape dough piece over the top and seal with a fork — going around the edge until the dough is pressed and sealed all the way around.

Bake in the over for 14-17 minutes.

Variations of This Recipe:

  • Veggie: If you prefer to make a vegetarian calzone, swap pepperoni for your choice of veggies.
  • Vegan: If you want to make these calzones vegan, simply use your favorite vegan cheese and substitute the pepperoni for another topping.
  • Adjust the Size: The size of your calzone is up to you. You can adjust the dough however you would like or use a larger or smaller cookie cutter.

  6. Lightly grease a bowl with olive oil, remove the dough from the mixing bowl place dough in the greased bowl. Cover with towel and place in a warm surface. We put ours in a microwave. Let the dough rise for 1 hour until doubled in size.
