There is truly nothing like a freshly organized linen closet. It’s probably one of the most satisfying spaces to organize in your home, and until you have an organization system in place, you probably don’t know what you’re missing.

When we moved into our very first apartment after college, we had the smallest linen closet in our bathroom. It could barely hold the few towels we had, but the only way it actually worked was because of the organization system we put into place.

If you’re looking for a storage solution for your linen closet, we’ve got you covered. These nine linen closet organization ideas will help your tidy up your space and make you wonder why you didn’t do it sooner (LOL).

1. Sort By Item Type

First things first, we recommend sorting the items in your closet with like-items. It’s a super simple concept, but is one of the easiest ways to quickly refresh your line closet.

Keep towels, hand towels and washcloths on one shelf together. Place bed linens on another and store the bulkier bedding, blankets and pillows on the higher shelves that you don’t reach to as often.

2. Use Shelf Dividers

One of the most genius organization inventions ever are shelf dividers. Not only do we use them in regular, small closet organization, but they are perfect for linen closets as well.

The acrylic shelf dividers seamlessly divide each shelf to store different items. They also help to reinforce the division of towels and bedding — making you closet look even neater.

When you’re organizing a space, you always want to match the item size to the bin size. If you’re organizing large linens, like bedding, blankets, pillows and towels, large storage bins are the move.

Felt bins are our favorite large bins to use. They are relatively light in size, they don’t scrape your wooden shelves and they look super cute too.

4. Make Your Linen Closet Aesthetic and Functional

Sometimes you just have to match the aesthetic of your linen closet to your home. If it motivates you to do laundry and make your bed, then making your closet cute is a must.

Add some functional wicker baskets to the space and matching towels to make the space look and fell cohesive.

5. Use Hanging Storage Racks

We’ve used hanging storage racks in kitchen organization projects, but think they are amazing to use in a linen closet as well.

Hanging storage racks create additional storage options that wasn’t there before. It’s basically like adding an additional shelf to your linen closet — making this a perfect idea to recreate in a small closet space.

Just because you have a small linen closet, doesn’t mean you can’t store everything you need to. With practical, compact storage bins you can make sorting and organizing a breeze. Add labels to bins so you know exactly where to find what you need.

Additionally, add a hanging ironing board and iron rack over the back of the door. This will keep those items out of sight and out of mind.

7. Use a Variety of Bins to Organize

One of the best hacks when organizing a closet is to use a variety of bins to organize. Using different sizes of bins and materials of bins is not only pleasing for the eye, but it’s also super functional.

Store smaller laundry products in clear bins so you can easily see where they are. Add larger wicker shelf baskets to store smaller linens — like hand towels, placemats or washcloths. Any extra space you have, use it as towel storage.

8. Minimal Storage Helps to Keep Clutter Out

Making the switch to a more minimalist approach can be beneficial if you’re not working with much space. Add a few bins and containers for items you wish to conceal and use the rest of the space to store your towels and bedding.

9. Sort, Fold and Label

Our last linen closet organization hack is simple, but it will help you get the job done so much quicker. We follow a three-step method when organizing linen closets.

  1. Sort: Take out all the items in your closet and sort them into piles of like items. (i.e. place all the towels together, all the washcloths together ect.)
  2. Fold: Neatly fold all the linens so you can place them in your respective bins or shelves.
  3. Label: If you’re storing items in baskets bins or containers, adding labels makes find what you need super easy. Trust us, you’ll be thankful for doing this.
