How to Make this Herby Olive Oil Lemon Burrata Appetizer

Step 1. Slice baguette, drizzle with olive oil and season and bake.

Start by preheating oven to 425°F to toast the baguette slices. While the oven is preheating, slice the French baguette into 1/4-inch thick pieces.

Place the bread slices on a parchment-lined baking sheet and brush them with some olive oil before seasoning them with some garlic powder and onion powder.

Toast the baguette slices for about 6-7 minutes until they are browned on the edges. Remove them from the oven and set them to the side while you make the cheese.

Step 2. Slice burrata cheese, drizzle with olive oil, lemon and herbs.

Place two large rounds of burrata cheese in the center of your serving plate and use a knife to slice and “X” into the tops of the burrata. The outside of the burrata is a firmer mozzarella cheese and the inside is a softer cheese. It’s great for slicing and spreading.

Drizzle the top of the cheese with olive oil, lemon zest, slice fresh basil leaves and some salt and pepper.

Step 3. Plate cheese with toasted baguette slices and serve while baguettes are hot.

Serve the cheese on a large plate or serving platter with the slices of burrata surrounding the cheese. Use a cheese knife or butter knife to scoop and spread the cheese on the slices and enjoy.

Tips for Making This Summer Appetizer

  • Let the burrata come to room temperature. The center will get extra creamy and the fresh, creamy flavor of the burette will be more prevalent. Take the burrata out of the refrigerator about 20-30 minutes before you plan to serve.
  • Use good quality olive oil. This will make a huge difference in the flavor!!A low grade olive oil can taste flat and bland. Choose a flavorful extra-virgin olive oil to complement the rest of the ingredients.
  • Keep a careful eye on the baguette slices. While toasting the baguette slices, be sure to keep a careful eye on them so that they don’t burn. You want them to be golden on the edges and slightly crisp so that they have enough structure to scoop up the burrata.
  • Best if served immediately! For the best flavor and texture, serve the burrata as soon as the baguette slices come out of the oven. The contrast of the warm crispy bread with the cool creamy burrata is what makes this appetizer so delicious!

Recipe FAQ

Burrata is a fresh Italian cheese made from mozzarella and filled with stracciatella and cream. The outer casing is firm and milky, while the center becomes rich, creamy, and almost spoonable when cut open.

Yes, but the texture will be different. Fresh mozzarella can be used if you are in a pinch, but burrata’s creamy center is what makes this appetizer iconic.

Fresh thyme or oregano would add a delicious warmth to the cheese.

Burrata is delicious with crackers, crostini, cubed ciabatta bread or focaccia. If you want to make a larger appetizer spread, plate with fresh vegetables, prosciutto or fresh fruit.

How to Store Leftover Burrata

Keep leftover burrata refrigerated in a sealed container and enjoy it within 1–2 days for the best texture and flavor. Toasted baguette slices can be stored separately at room temperature.
