These Salted Toffee Dark Chocolate Tahini Bars will be your new favorite decedent treat for the holidays and basically any other time of year!
Every time we come back from New York City, we’re always inspired by all the flavor combinations of the different foods we eat while we are there. Most of the food we eat while we are there are sweet treats, and one of our all-time favorite places to go is Seed + Mill.
They have such delicious halva and tahini ice cream that’s irresistibly good! It’s been a week since we’ve been back from visiting their store, and we knew we had to make a tahini dessert that was just as decadent.
We got in the kitchen and tested this recipe and almost cried tears of joy it was so good! The middle layer of these tahini bars especially reminds us of their classic halva recipe. Made with a base of toffee salted crackers, a creamy tahini center and topped with thin layer of tahini swirled dark chocolate.
This dessert is perfect for holiday parties, winter gatherings with friends or pretty much any other time of year you’re craving something decadent and delicious!

Salted Toffee Dark Chocolate Tahini Bars
What’s in this recipe?
Saltine Crackers: The Saltine crackers add a salty, crunch layer on the bottom of the dark chocolate tahini bars.
Brown Sugar: The brown sugar is boiled down with butter to make a rich toffee coating over the saltine crackers.
Butter: Butter is added with the brown sugar to make a the toffee coating for the crackers.
Salt: A bit of salt is added to the toffee mixture to balance the sweetness of the sugar.
Ground Oats: We ground oats using our Nutribullet, so that it formed a fine oat powder. This made the mixture more smooth and creamy.
Powdered Sugar: The powdered sugar adds a light sweetness to the tahini layer.
Tahini: Tahini is the star ingredient in this recipe. It’s made from ground, roasted sesame seeds until it creates a creamy, butter consistency. It’s super similar to peanut butter, but has a delicious sesame flavor.
Vanilla Bean Paste: Vanilla bean paste is added to the tahini mixture to enhance the existing flavors.
Dark Chocolate Chips: Dark chocolate chips are melted and poured on the top to add a rich, chocolatey layer on top of the bars.
Coconut Oil: We added a tablespoon of coconut oil to the chocolate chips to add some shine and smoothness to the chocolate.
How to Make the Salted Toffee Dark Chocolate Tahini Bars
These bars have a few steps, but are actually super simple to make! You’ll have dessert for your next gathering in no time!
Make the Toffee Crackers…
To start, you’ll need to preheat your oven to 400°F and prepare your baking dish (this is similar to the one we used). Line the baking sheet with parchment paper and spread the crushed Saltine crackers on the bottom.
Then in a medium size pot, add brown sugar, butter and salt. Melt the ingredients in the pot while stirring frequently. Bring the mixture to a boil (it should be a darker brown color by now). Cook for about 4 more minutes over the stove stove top, stirring occasionally. Then, remove the mixture from the heat.
Pour the toffee mixture over the top of the crushed crackers and spread evenly across until all the pieces are coated. Bake the toffee saltines in the oven for 5 more minutes. There should be small bubbles forming on the top. Allow the base layer to cool.
Make the tahini filling…
While the toffee cracker layer is cooling, it’s time to make the tahini layer. Start by adding the melted butter, ground oats, and and powdered sugar to a mixing bowl. Stir the ingredients until well combined. Then add the tahini to the oat mixture. This will help add moisture and a delicious flavor to the bars.
Once the bottom layer has cooled completely, gently spread the tahini mixture over the top, using your fingers to press it evenly over the bottom layer.
Melt the chocolate…
In a small mixing bowl, melt the dark chocolate chips and coconut oil in the microwave, stopping to stir the mixture ever 30 seconds. Once the chocolate is completely melted, pour it over the top of the bars.
We wanted to add a fancy design to the top of our bars, so we placed small dollops of tahini on the top and swirled it into the chocolate. This step is totally optional, but makes them look so beautiful!
Lastly, serve to friends and family or package them as delicious holiday treats. Store the bars in your refrigerator for up to two weeks (if they aren’t eaten by then).
