What Yogurt is Best for Granola Yogurt Bowls?

We are fans of greek yogurt and most recently have discovered skyr. At the moment, Skyr is our personal favorite but greek yogurt is a close second choice! If you have never tried Skyr, it is a bit thicker than greek yogurt and tastes less bitter. A couple of our favorite yogurt brands are Siggis, Brown Cow, Trader Joes Skyr! If lactose is an issue for you and you can not opt for a plant-based yogurt. Our favorite plant-based yogurt is Siggis plant-based coconut skyr yogurt.

The Best Homemade Granola

Our granola recipe is in our opinion what makes these yogurt bowls irresistible!! It makes a large batch that can carry you throughout the week and is great for prepping. It’s so good we sometimes snack on it by the handfuls! It is a mixture of rolled oats, coconut oil, ginger, cinnamon, vanilla and sweetened with natural sugars, maple syrup and coconut sugar. After the oats cook and cools, it break it into large crunchy clusters. Every week we make a large batch of this granola for our breakfasts and snacks. We recommend storing in large mason jars.

If you don’t have the time to make granola, feel free to use your favorite store-bought granola instead!

What’s in this recipe?

Greek Yogurt or skyr: The base of each bowl is a heaping cup of greek yogurt or skyr yogurt. Brand and flavor options are up to your personal preference!

Fresh Fruit: We love topping our bowls with whatever fresh fruit we have on hand. Some of our favorites are blueberries, blackberries, citrus fruits and banana slices!

Seeds and nuts: Seed and nuts are a great way to add some more flavor and crunch to your bowls. Some of our favorites to top with are pecans, walnuts and pomegranate seeds.

Oats: We love using gluten-free oats in our granola, because we try to limit the amount of gluten we eat in a day. If you are gluten intolerant, then these would be a great option for you to use as well. Regular oats, work just too!

Coconut Oil: When making granola, we prefer to use coconut oil. It’s super healthy. If you are worried that it will make your granola taste like coconut, we can attest that it certainly does not affect the flavor.

Coconut Sugar: Coconut sugar is a great and super healthy substitute for brown sugar. It adds a caramel taste to the granola.

Maple Syrup: The maple syrup is he star of the show. It’s what gives this granola it’s maple flavor, and binds the oats together to make the clusters.

VanillaVanilla is added to the coconut oil, sugar, maple syrup mixture before pouring and coating the oats.

Cinnamon: We add cinnamon to just about everything we can, and the cinnamon adds a depth of spiced flavor to the granola.

Ground ginger: The addition of ginger to this recipe adds another layer of tang and spice. It’s a subtle, but delicious flavor.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Granola Recipe

  • 5 cups rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup melted coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 1/3 cup coconut sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Yogurt Bowls

  • 1 cup greek yogurt or skyr
  • fresh fruit, berries, nuts, seeds (to top)

Instructions

Homemade Granola (optional but recommended!)

  1. Preheat oven to 325 F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk coconut oil, maple syrup, coconut sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Add oats and coat the maple syrup mixture over the oats using a wood spoon.
  4. Dump and spread the hot mixture in an even layer across the prepared baking sheet. Press the oats firmly into the baking sheet using the back of the wooden spoon.
  5. Bake for 15 minutes, rotate the pan, and bake for another 15 minutes. Remove from oven and let granola cool for 1 hour to firm up and get crunchy (cooling completely is important so the granola breaks into larger clusters).
  6. Using your hands, break the granola into clusters. Transfer to a mason jar or air-tight container.

Assemble Bowl

  1. Add one cup of greek yogurt or Skyrr to your bowl. Top with fresh fruit of your choice. We chose pomegranate seeds and blackberries on one bowl. For another we chose cara cara oranges and dried ginger. Add 1/3 cup of the homemade granola and enjoy. You can also drizzle with honey to add a bit more sweetness to the tart yogurt.
