Tips for making Texas BBQ baked beans
- Used canned beans vs dried. If you’re wanting to save some time, use canned beans instead of soaking dry beans.
- Adjust spice to your liking. Don’t like a lot of heat to your beans? Remove the seeds in the jalapeño. If you love heat, keep the seeds! For a more mild taste, leave a few seeds in the dish.
- Mix up your sweetener. Depending on where you’re from, you may have a different preference for sweetener in your baked beans. Traditionally, southern baked beans use brown sugar, while northern states use molasses or maple syrup. We love the taste of mixing both brown sugar and maple syrup. You get a rich molasses flavor and the brown sugar helps to thicken and caramelize the beans nicely.
- Balance sweetness with an acid. An acid, like vinegar is going to cut through the sweetness with a bit of tang.

Canned or dried beans?
The choice is up to you! There won’t be much difference in the final product.
- If you want to cut down on time and steps, used canned beans.
- If you have time to soak your beans, feel free to do so!
