What We Love About This Recipe

  • The Sweet Dough: This is the roll we use for our traditional cinnamon rolls and it was passed down to us from our Aunt Jenni. Her cinnamon roll recipe is famous in our family and every chance we get, we love to make her cinnamon rolls. The dough used in this recipe is just the same — sweet, delicious and doughy.
  • The Nutella Filling: We wanted to make a filling that had a similar consistency to a cinnamon roll filling, but also incorporated Nutella. This Nutella filling is what makes these rolls insanely good!
  • The Chopped Hazelnuts: The addition of chopped hazelnuts on top of the rolls adds a delicious crunch and accentuates the yummy hazelnut flavor. We recommend not skipping this step.

Ingredient Notes

  • Flour: We always use unbleached all-purpose flour when baking cinnamon rolls, cookies or other pastries.
  • Butter: You can use any type of butter you would like. We love using Kerigold butter because of it’s health benefits and delicious flavor.
  • Yeast: For this recipe we used quick-rise yeast. It speeds up the process, which is totally worth it since the dough has to rise a couple of times throughout the process.
  • Nutella: For this recipe you’ll use about half of a small Nutella jar.
  • Espresso Powder: We added 1/2 teaspoon of espresso powder to the filling to help accentuate the chocolate flavor of the Nutella.
  • Hazelnuts: We had a difficult time finding hazelnuts at our local grocer store, but we were able to find them in the bins at Whole Foods. If you can’t find hazelnuts near you, you can order them HERE.

Tips for Success:

  • Don’t Cut Corners: This is a fairly simple cinnamon roll recipe, however it doesn’t mean that you should skip out on the details. Allow the dough to rise the full time and not rushing the process will give you the results you want.
  • Sift the Powdered Sugar for the Glaze: Sifting the powdered sugar before combining it with he milk and vanilla will ensure that there aren’t any clumps in the glaze —giving you a smooth vanilla glaze for the rolls.
