New York Style Banana Pudding: What is It?
You may be wondering what makes this banana pudding New York Style? And the truth is that it’s inspired by one of the most famous bakeries in New York – Magnolia Bakery.
They have a modern take on banana pudding, where it is served in to go containers for easy eating on-the-go. They also adda layer of fresh cake to their banana pudding mixture, which in our opinion takes banana pudding into another stratosphere of deliciousness.
We grew up on southern-style banana pudding but have to say, this whipped blended New York Style pudding trumps the rest.

How to make mixed berry banana pudding….
Our summer twist on New-York style banana pudding is super simple without sacrificing taste!
1. Make instant pudding and chill.
First step is to start by making the pudding. It will need to chill and solidify for a couple of hours to that it can reach a desired consistency. You will whisk a can of condensed milk, cold water and pudding mix together until smooth.
Store pudding in an airtight container in the fridge for at least 30 minutes to get nice and cold.
2. Bake cake and cool completely.
While the pudding is chilling, make the cake. We kept this recipe simple and used a boxed cake mix. For this flavor of banana pudding, we recommend a vanilla cake mix or yellow cake mix. Before you bake the cake, swirl in several spoonfuls of mixed berry jam. This will give the mixture an even stronger berry flavor.
Test cake doneness by poking the center with a fork or toothpick. If it comes out clean with no batter, the cake is done. Let cake cool for at least 1 hour before assembling.
3. Make whipped cream.
Add heavy cream to a large bowl of an electric mixer and whisk on medium-high speed for several minutes until stiff peaks form. Be careful not to over mix.
Note: reserve 1 cup of cool whip for topping. Fold the rest into the pudding mixture. This will make the pudding light and fluffy
4. Slice cake and layer banana pudding.
Slice cake into cubes before layering the banana pudding. We recommend using a trifle dish or a deep dish, that way you can make several layers of pudding.
Make layers of pudding, cake, fruit and Nilla wafers. Top with extra whipped cream, cake crumbles, fruit.
5. Scoop into serving cups and enjoy!
There’s a high chance you’ll come back for seconds!!

The Four Layers of Mixed Berry Banana Pudding
There isn’t much of a science to layering a banana pudding, but you want to make sure you make even layers so that you can get all the flavors in each scoop
- Pudding.
- Cake.
- Bananas and berries.
- Nilla wafers.
- Repeat 2 more times!

Tips for Making Mixed Berry Banana Pudding
- Use ripe bananas. You want to make sure your bananas aren’t too green but are not too brown and mushy. A ripe banana will be yellow in color with some brown spots.
- Use instant pudding. Instant pudding sets so much quicker than regular pudding mixes.
- Use a boxed cake mix. Another time and ingredient saver. There’s a few layers to this pudding mixture, so we’re making it super simple!
- Let your cake cool completely. This super important! Warm cake may alter the texture of your pudding when assembling, so make sure your cake is completely cooled before building your pudding layers. It should take about 45 minutes – 1 hour to cool completely on a cooling rack.
- Let the mixture set in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before scooping out. The longer the mixture sits in the fridge, the better it gets. If you can wait longer than 30 minutes, before serving, do! This way your Nilla wagers will be softer.
