Queue the time machine—we’re heading back to the summer of 2005! If there was one lunchbox snack we’d happily bring back from the early 2000s, it would be Kudos bars. If you remember unwrapping one after school, you probably also remember the collective heartbreak when they quietly disappeared from grocery store shelves.

The good news? You don’t have to rely on nostalgia anymore. These homemade Kudos bars capture everything that made the original so memorable, but with richer ingredients, bigger flavor, and the satisfaction of making them from scratch. They start with a chewy base of puffed rice cereal, old-fashioned oats, brown sugar, honey, and peanut butter, which creates a perfect soft and crunchy texture. They are then dipped in chocolate and finished with a drizzle of chocolate and sprinkling of mini M&M’s to give them that signature candy-coated finish.

Every bite is nutty, chocolatey, crunchy, and instantly familiar—the kind of treat that somehow tastes even better than you remembered. These homemade Kudos snack bars are perfect for summer afternoons, packing for road trips, sharing with friends, or grabbing straight from the fridge whenever you need a sweet snack.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Puffed rice cereal
  • Oats
  • Brown sugar
  • Honey
  • Peanut butter
  • Salt
  • Vanilla extract
  • Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
  • Coconut oil
  • Mini M&M’s

How to Make Homemade Kudos Bars, Step by Step

Step 1. Melt brown sugar, honey, and peanut butter in a saucepan.

Start by melting brown sugar, honey, and peanut butter in a saucepan over medium heat. This mixture is going to be the sweet ‘glue’ to hold the bars together. The nutty, caramel-like sauce will recreate that iconic Kudos flavor.

Frequently stir the mixture so that it melts evenly. Once the mixture is melted and smooth, remove the saucepan from the heat and get ready to mix the mixture with the cereal.

Step 2. Mix the melted peanut butter mixture with cereal and oats.

Pour rice cereal and oats into a large  bowl and stir to mix. Next, pour the warm, melted peanut butter mixture over the cereal. Use a silicone spatula to mix the cereal mixture until the cereal is evenly coated in the peanut butter sauce.

Step 3. Press the cereal-oat mixture into a rimmed sheet pan. Chill for 2 hours.

Pour the coated cereal mixture into a wax paper-lined sheet pan. Use a silicone spatula or your hands to spread the gooey cereal in an even layer in the bottom of the pan. Press the cereal firmly into the sheet pan.

Cover the bars in plastic wrap and refrigerate them for 2 hours. They will solidify and crisp up

Tip: It may help to place a piece of wax paper on top of the bars before pressing them into the pan. The wax paper won’t stick to the bars, and you can avoid a sticky mess.

Step 4. Cut bars and dip in chocolate. Top with chocolate drizzle and mini M&Ms. Chill again for 1 hour.

Remove the set bars from the fridge to slice. Pull up on both sides of the wax paper to lift the bars out of the sheet pan.

Use a sharp knife to first cut the cereal block in half. Then slice each half into 5-6 evenly sized bars. You should end up with about 10-12 bars from the batch.

Melt chocolate in the microwave in 30-second intervals. Add a teaspoon of coconut oil to the chips for a smooth texture. Stir the chocolate between each interval until it is smooth.

Pour the chocolate into a shallow bowl and dip the bottom of each bar into the chocolate to coat the bottoms. Place the chocolate-coated bar on a clean piece of wax paper.

Now our favorite part – decorating! Coat the bottoms of the remaining bars in chocolate before drizzling the top of each bar with more chocolate. While the chocolate is still melty, sprinkle the tops with M&M’s. Place the bars back in the fridge for at least 45 minutes to chill.

Tips for Making Homemade Kudos Bars

  • Press the mixture firmly into an even layer in the pan. You want to make sure the bars are tightly packed so that when they set and are cut, they won’t crumble.
  • Melt chocolate chips with 1 tsp coconut oil. Add some coconut oil to the chocolate chips, and get a smooth, silky melted chocolate that doesn’t clump when melting. Coconut oil melts so well with the chocolate, and it just takes a small amount!
  • Line the pan with wax or parchment paper. Leaving a little overhang on the sides makes it easy to lift the bars out in one piece for clean, even slicing.
  • Let the bars chill completely before cutting. Give the bars at least 2 hours to firm up. It will make the bars much easier to slice into clean-cut rectangles without falling apart.
  • Cut the bars smaller for fun-sized sharing. If you’re hosting a party or want to make smaller, bite-sized bars, cut the long rectangle bars in half or thirds.

Recipe FAQ

Yes! Crunchy peanut butter will add an extra crunch to the bars. Whereas creamy peanut butter will create a smoother, more classic Kudos bar.

The peanut butter is best because it really does create that nutty, smooth sauce. But if you need to be peanut-free, cashew butter, or sunflower seed butter all work well.

We recommend swapping honey for maple syrup. If you don’t have maple syrup or honey on hand, you can also use light corn syrup. (Corn syrup isn’t our first pick because it doesn’t have as much flavor depth.)

If you see the bars are crumbling, it may be for several reasons:

  • The bars may need more time to chill before slicing.
  • The mixture was not pressed firmly enough into the pan
  • The peanut butter sauce wasn’t evenly blended into the cereal

Yes! The original kudos bars had chocolate, snickers and M&M variations. Feel free to make them however you’d like. Top with mini chocolate chips, chopped peanuts, or drizzle of white chocolate.

How to store the homemade kudos bars

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 7 days.

Let the chocolate set before storing. After decorating, chill the bars until the chocolate is fully hardened. This keeps the chocolate from smearing and makes the bars easier to stack and transport.
