Never heard of Acai? This native South American berry has become very popular in the past several years and one of its most popular ways to be prepared in western culture is in an acai smoothie bowl! Acai is a superfood rich in antioxidants and fiber and has some anti-inflammatory properties. Not to mention, it is so yummy when blended in smoothies! It is no mystery why this berry has gotten a lot of attention.
Where can I buy Acai for my smoothie bowl?
Acai can be purchased as a powder or pureed and frozen in packets. With increased popularity of Acai products, you should be able to purchase at your local food store. But to make it easy for you, we have a link for you.
How can I make the best acai bowl smoothie at home?
- Pack in the Frozen Fruit!! You want to make sure you are only using a lot of frozen fruit! Smoothie bowls will require more frozen fruit than a smoothie. Using frozen fruit is very important to achieve the consistency you are trying to achieve for the best smoothie bowl.
- Less Liquid, the better!! I know I keep stressing on creating a good consistency, but that is what is so distinct about Acai smoothie bowls. They are almost ice-cream like in texture. In order to achieve that, it is important to start with minimum amount of liquid. It is easier to add liquid as you go!
- Use a high powered blender! We highly recommend a Vitamix blender, to create the best Acai smoothie bowl. It is an investment, so if you do not have the funds, our second favorite blender is the Nutribullet . Although the Nutribullet does not achieve the best consistency, it gets pretty close!

Description
This yummy acaí bowl can be topped with granola and your favorite fruit. And by adding less liquid to the smoothie, it creates a thicker soft-serve-like texture that makes for a perfect treat!
Ingredients
- 1 packet frozen acaí (or scoop of acai powder)
- 1 1/2 frozen bananas
- 1/4 cup frozen strawberries
- 1/4 cup blueberries
- 1 tbsp nut butter
- 1/4–1/2 cup almond milk (Alt: milk or other milk alternatives)
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to the blender and blend until smooth.
- Pour in a cup and enjoy!
Notes
Tip for making bowls: I find that using a higher quality blender (such as a Vita-mix) are better for making the thick consistency desired for smoothie bowls. Instead of adding 1 cup of milk, add about a ¼ cup of milk to begin and pulse the blender about 20 times. The ingredients should start to slowly come together. After pulsing the mixture, puree until blended smooth and thick.
