It’s pumpkin spice season and this dairy-free healthy pumpkin spice latte will warm your soul. It’s a cozy ad delicious drink to have on cold crisp mornings or curled up reading your favorite novel. Pumpkin spice, almond milk, pumpkin puree and rich maple syrup make up this decedent cup of joe. This healthy latte is our go to from late August through November.
What’s the Story Behind the Healthy Pumpkin Spice Latte?
Every year we wait for Starbucks to release their pumpkin spice latte. It’s so creamy and the pumpkin flavor cuts straight through. However, when we looked at the nutrition facts of a basic pumpkin spice latte, we new we had to create a healthy version.
We experimented to find the right amount of pumpkin puree to make the pumpkin flavor cut through the rich coffee taste, just like Starbucks does. After trial and error we found the perfect amount of pumpkin puree to create the most delicious healthy pumpkin spice latte. We seriously make this every morning during fall, because it’s such a cozy drink for the season.
What’s in the Recipe?
Pumpkin Puree: The pumpkin puree gives this healthy pumpkin spice latte a creamy, pumpkin flavor. Without this, the pumpkin flavor wouldn’t cut through as much. This is essential to getting all the pumpkin flavor you want in your latte.
Pumpkin Spice: Pumpkin spice is a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves. This is another important ingredient. The pumpkin spice adds depth and all the flavors that are reminiscent of fall.
Maple Syrup: The maple syrup adds a rich sweetness to the healthy pumpkin spice latte. We prefer adding maple syrup to this latte, because it compliments the other flavors in the latte.
Almond Milk: This is what makes the recipe dairy free and vegan. We prefer using almond milk in our lattes. It foams nicely in our espresso machine. If you don’t have a milk frother attached to your espresso machine, this milk frother has incredible reviews and will froth your almond milk so perfectly.
Recipe Notes
Even though we recommend using almond milk in this recipe, you can substitute coconut milk, oat milk or another alternative milk. We use coconut milk almost just as much as we use almond milk in our lattes.
If you find that you don’t have any maple syrup left in your pantry, you can use honey as well. It won’t provide as rich of a taste as the maple syrup, but it does add just as much sweetness .
Lastly, we like to sprinkle a bit of pumpkin spice and coconut sugar over the top of our lattes. If you’ve haven’t tried coconut sugar on your latte, it seriously tastes like a sprinkle of caramel over the top of your coffee.
