Small Apartment Hacks: 5 Steps to Organize Your Tiny Closet

Does you closet seem to be more of a daunting space to walk into, rather than a space that inspires you to try on clothes? We felt that way about our closet for so long. We watched Get Organized with The Home Edit , and knew we finally had to tackle our closet.

When we moved into our apartment, we knew we were going to have to share a tiny closet. We knew that we were going to have to find some small apartment hacks and learn how to use our limited space in the best way.

These small apartment hacks are the exact ones we used to help us organize our tiny closet. From the steps we took to purge our closet to the organization products we used, these tips will help you organize your space and find efficient ways to organize the minimal space you have.

This post is all about 5 small apartment hacks to help you organize your closet.

Small Apartment Hacks: 5 Steps to an Organized Closet

1. Purge the Items in Your Closet

This is the most important step when you are organizing your tiny closet. Purging means, you take out all the items in your closet and ask yourself if you want to keep the item.

A good rule of thumb when purging items is, if you haven’t worn or used the item in over a year, you probably don’t have a use for it anymore. The items you haven’t used in a long period of time should be donated or thrown away.

We like to make 3 piles when we are organizing the items in our tiny closet: a donate pile, a throw away pile and a keep pile. Making piles will help you easily know where and what to do with each item.

2. Organize Your “Keep” Items into Categories

After you purge your closet, you’re ready to organize your items into piles based on the type of clothing it is. For example, you’ll make a stack of your dresses, make a stack of your jeans, or make a stack of your short-sleeve tops. We liked to narrow the categories to the type of item, because this will help you easily assemble and organize the items when they are ready to be placed back in the tiny closet.

Some categories to sort your items into are:

  • dresses
  • skirts
  • jumpsuits
  • short-sleeve blouse
  • long-sleeve blouses
  • short-sleeve t-shirts
  • long-sleeve t-shirts
  • sweatshirts
  • pants
  • jeans
  • jacks
  • cardigans
  • coats
  • tennis shoes
  • heels
  • sandals
  • hats
  • jewelry

3. Zoning and Containment

Small Apartment Hacks: 5 Steps to Organize Your Tiny Closet

This was a small apartment hack we learned from watching The Home Edit. When we were planning our design for the closet, we created zones based on each category we had sorted our items into. When you sort your items based on the different categories, these are the zones you will want to have in your closet.

A way we visualize our zones is by uploading an image of the space we are organizing to Canva. Then we block out zones of the closet that we can envision the items fitting in in the space.

On out Canva design, we like to note how we are going to contain these items. Containment is how the items are going to be stored. Are they going to be stored on hangers? Are they going to be stored in buckets? We show you all the organization products we used down below.

4. Buy the Organization Products You Need

This is the fun part! One of our favorite things to do is shop for organization products. For your tiny closet, you will need to buy items that will hold the items you need, but ones that will fit in the space you have.

Are your shoes in piles on the floor? One organization product we have always had in our closet is a shoe rack. If you get only one thing, this is the product you should get. It makes all the difference in your closet and will give you so much more room on the floor of your closet.

5. Organize Your Clothes and Accessories

This is by far the easiest step when organizing your small closet. You have all the baskets, hangers and shoe racks you need, it’s time to organize.

This is when you can hang all the clothes you categorized and organize them into their designated zones. We started out with the items at the top and then made our way to the items on the floor. This will probably be the best way to organize your closet too.

Working from the top down allows you to situate all the hard-to-reach items first and then work your way down to the floor where your shoes and other easy-to-access items are placed.

Organizing our tiny closet using these 5 small apartment hacks made the process so much easier!
