There’s just something that hits different when summer arrives. I wake up feeling more motivated, energized, and eager to try new things. Maybe it’s the gift of more sunlight hours, or maybe it’s the expectation of making the most out of a more chill schedule. Summer just seems to invite a spirit of making room for things you’ve always wanted to do.
There are so many fun activities to try, and this year, I’m determined to try at least a couple of new hobbies. I’m in my late twenties, it’s time to spice things up, and what better season to do it in than summer? Today I’m sharing the list of 24 fun summer hobbies that are worth the try. Keep reading to learn more and get inspired.
24 Fun Summer Hobbies
1. Go for a Daily Swim
There’s truly nothing better than going for a swim on a hot summer day. Whether you have a pool in your backyard, your apartment complex, or join a public pool, taking a daily swim is a refreshing habit to start and keep you cool on hot summer days.

2. Cook Your Way Through a Cookbook
I have a ton of cookbooks that I’ve made a few recipes from here and there, but this summer, I’m taking the leap and diving into one of them. If you’re like me and want to try more new recipes, cooking your way through a cookbook is such a fun summer hobby to start with friends or try on your own.

3. Write Something New
I love to write, but feel like I never make the effort to carve out time to write something that’s creative and unique frommy day job of editorial writing.
Taking the time to intentionally journal my thoughts, write a poem, craft a catch-up letter to a friend in a mother state, or be ambitious and start a creative writing journey is a wonderful hobby to escape and think in a different way.
4. Start Your Own Book Club
If you don’t already know of a book club to join in your area, starting your own is the perfect summer activity. Your friends most likely have a more relaxed schedule during this time too, and can carve out some time to meet every month to discuss a new read.
5. Perfect Your Iced Coffee Recipe
As I’m writing this right now, I’m drinking a homemade iced coffee and thinking of how I could perfect the best recipe for summer. There are so many different flavors to try, like an iced coconut latte, an orange latte, or even an iced lavender latte. The possibilities are endless, and having a good espresso machine and a cute drinking glass is a must.

6. Take Your Workout Outdoors
As soon as it’s sunny and 75°F outside, I immediately take my workouts outside. Even on hotter summer days, I crave the sunlight and the sweat. Whether you like to walk, run, or do yoga in the park, there are opportunities to do it all outside this summer.

7. Try Indoor Rock Climbing
While I’m not a huge fan of outdoor rock climbing, indoor rock climbing is definitely more my speed. I used to do it all the time and be really good at it when I was younger, so there’s always an urge to take my shot at it again and have some fun with it.
If you want to try indoor rock climbing, look for different gyms and rock climbing facilities in your area. It would be a fun way to stay active and try your hand at something new.
8. Take a Pottery Class
Taking a pottery class and actually becoming good at it has been a goal of mine for a long time. If you’ve been wanting to try your hand at it, summer is such a great time to do it. You can learn to make a cute mug for your homemade lattes at home or a cute platter for hosting friends this summer.
9. Learn a New Instrument
Is there an instrument you’ve always wanted to learn how to play but never got the chance? I played piano growing up, and always wanted to try guitar too. Nowadays, there are so many different ways to learn — via private lessons or even YouTube videos.
10. Practice Flower Arranging
Flowers are in full bloom this time of year. Whether you have a flower garden to pick from at your house or buy a few bundles from your local Trader Joe’s, you can have fun arranging them into beautiful bouquets. Make them for a few places around your home or give them to friends and neighbors for a sweet and unexpected gift.

11. Start a Dinner Party Club
In an excuse to get the whole group of friends together on a regular basis, start a dinner party club. Decide where, when, and what everyone should bring. It’s such a fun and casual way to hang out with your friends this summer. Plus, it’ll be fun to see what different recipes everyone brings to the party every time.

12. Plant a Garden
One of my favorite things to do in the summer — no matter where I live— is to plant some type of vegetable, fruit, or herb garden. There’s nothing like eating from your own garden. Fresh tomatoes make the perfect caprese salad and a bunch of herbs add delicious flavor to everyday meals. It’s truly the ultimate summer cuisine experience, cooking with food from your garden.

13. Bike the City
With warmer weather comes the urge to travel in different ways around the city. Instead of walking or driving in the car, take a ride on your bike or a City Bike. Plus, it’s a fun activity to explore the city you’re in too.
14. Go to a Summer Show
Whether it’s a summer concert series at the park or a musical at a local theater, take the opportunity to go to a summer show. It’s a great date night idea or solo date when you’re craving an outing on your own.

15. Take a Cooking Class
No matter what level of home chef you are or aspire to be, cooking classes are so much fun. Invite your friends to join and sign up for a recipe or meal that’s new and exciting. Plus, you’ll most likely go home with leftovers to enjoy the next day.

16. Learn a New Hairstyle
During the summer I always want to try a new hairstyle myself. I’m a creature of habit and almost always curl my hair with the same curling wand or pull it into a slick back bun on really hot days. This summer, I’m challenging myself to try a hair crimping tool for a natural beach wave look or overnight foam curlers for a tighter, fun curly do.

17. Try Your Hand at a Beginner Sewing Class
I learned a bit about sewing when I was younger, but think it would be fun to refresh my skills and take a beginner sewing class. If this sounds like something you would want to try too, check your local community college or event center for sewing classes in your area.
18. DIY Furniture & Home Decor
There’s nothing more satisfying than successfully completing a DIY project, and the summer is always the best time because the weather is warmer and you have more sunlight in the day to work longer on each project. DIY a piece of furniture, install some new shelves, or start that home project you’ve been putting off.
19. Make a Scrapbook
I grew up scrapbooking and would make friends scrapbooks for their birthdays — yes, I was that type of person. But, there’s something so sentimental and special about flipping through the pages of a curated book that’s filled with photos of all the memories you’ve made during the summer.

20. Join a Run Club
Almost every major city has a run club you could join. Find one that lines up with a schedule and make an effort to meet up with the group. This is a great way to get in exercise and connect with new people too.

21. Go for a Hike
Escape the city to find a wooded trail nearby to go on a hike. There’s always something so refreshing about being in nature. During the summer, you could even hike down to a swimming hole or river to take a quick dip before hiking back up.

22. Try a New Summer Mocktail
A crisp, cold mocktail on a hot summer day — nothing hits harder. While we have an alcoholic drink every now and then, mocktails are our go-to (and they honestly taste better, in our opinion). Check out this list of delicious mocktails to make this summer.
23. Explore New Shops Around Town
I am totally a victim of getting into a routine of only going to my favorite shops and restaurants around town. However, this summer I’m making an effort to try new shops I haven’t had a chance to visit this year. Everything from new bakeries, small boutiques, and even museums — it’s going to be a happening season.

24. Hit the Court
Whether it’s tennis, pickle ball, sand volleyball, or basketball, hit the court this summer. Maybe you want to jump back into the sport you played in high school or take lessons for one you’ve always wanted to play. It’s the perfect time to make the most of the day, so why not spend it doing something active?
