Hot chocolate but make it summer!! This frozen hot chocolate may be better than the original!! It tastes just like your favorite winter drink but now you can enjoy it year around when the temperatures tick up. 

A blend of frozen homemade hot chocolate cubes and milk, topped with a a light vanilla whipped cream and drizzled with a super easy homemade magic shell chocolate sauce. It is super fun and delicious treat perfect after hot summer day at the beach or for an after dinner sweet treat!

Frozen Hot Chocolate

What You’ll Need

Chocolate Milk: We didn’t hold back on the chocolate! We chose chocolate milk to enhance the chocolate flavor. If you don’t use chocolate milk, you won’t get that super rich chocolate flavor.

Cocoa Powder: You can either use a normal cocoa or dark chocolate cocoa powder. Essentially, you are making your own hot cocoa mix.

Powdered sugar: Powdered sugar and the cocoa powder together will make the frozen hot chocolate taste just like hot chocolate. 

Vanilla: A little touch of vanilla never hurts! We added some vanilla both to the frozen hot chocolate and the whipped cream. 

Salt: A pinch of salt helps to enhance the chocolate flavor. 

Milk: We used normal milk to add some liquid to blend the frozen milk ice cubes. But if you want even more chocolate, you can swap with more chocolate milk.

Heavy whipping cream: We prefer to make whipping cream homemade because it tastes better and is super easy to make! All you need is some whipping cream and an electric mixer to whisk. 

Chocolate chips: We topped the frozen hot chocolates with homemade chocolate shell. All you’ll need for this is some chocolate chips and coconut oil! See directions on how to make it below.

Coconut oil: Coconut oil will give the homemade magic shell sauce a rich smooth texture and will also make it harden super quickly.

How to make a super creamy frozen hot chocolate?

Don’t use ice!! Ice will water down the mixture after it is blended. So if you want to get that super creamy texture and taste, freeze chocolate milk mixture in ice cube molds. 

Follow these steps for making frozen milk cubes:
  1. Pour chocolate milk, cocoa powder, powdered sugar, vanilla and salt in a blender. Blend together for 10-15 seconds until all is blended.
  2. Pour the milk mixture into silicone ice cube molds to freeze for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  3. Once the chocolate milk cubes are frozen, poured them back in the blender, add a splash of milk to blend smoothly. Once its all blended, you get a thick and creamy frozen hot chocolate!

How to make homemade chocolate magic shell?

You just need two ingredients: chocolate chips and coconut oil. 

The best part about magic shell is that it creates a hard crunchy chocolate layer on the top of ice cream. You get the same taste and texture in this homemade magic shell!

It’s super simple!! Start by melting 1 cup of chocolate chips and 1 tablespoon of coconut oil together in the microwave or over the stovetop. If you are melting the chocolate in the microwave, melt 30 seconds at a time, stopping to stir. Once the chocolate is melted, stir one more time before drizzling over the top of your frozen hot chocolate.

Can I swap frozen milk cubes with ice?

We don’t recommend using ice cubes because will make it watery. And to get that super creamy smooth texture, you will want to make frozen milk cubes in the ice cube molds.

Description

Like a hot chocolate shake! Super chocolatey blend of frozen homemade hot chocolate cubes, topped with a a light vanilla whipped cream and drizzled with a super easy homemade magic shell chocolate sauce.


Ingredients

Scale

2 cups chocolate milk

2 tbsp cocoa powder

2 tbsp powdered sugar

1 tsp vanilla

1/4 tsp salt

3/4 cup milk

Homemade Whipped Cream

2 cups whipping cream

1 tsp vanilla

Homemade Chocolate Shell Sauce

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, melted

1 tbsp coconut oil


Instructions

  1. Pour chocolate milk, cocoa powder, powdered sugar, vanilla and a pinch of salt into a blender. Blend to mix and pour in ice cube trays. Place in freezer to freeze for 3-4 hours until completely frozen.
  2. About 15 minutes before you want to blend up your frozen hot chocolate, make your homemade whipped cream and chocolate shell syrup. 
  3. Whipping cream: Pour heavy cream into an electric mixer with a whisk attachment. Blend on high for 3-4 minutes until soft peaks form. 
  4. Chocolate shell syrup: In a small pot over medium heat, Add chocolate chips and coconut oil. Stir consistently until chocolate is smooth. Remove from heat as soon as it is melted. Let it cool for about 5 minutes. 
  5. After the cubes have frozen, pour hot chocolate ice cubes into a blender with 1 cup milk and blend until a creamy consistency. 
  6. Drizzle chocolate on the inside walls of your cup if you like extra chocolate shell. Pour frozen hot chocolate into cups. Top with whipped cream and extra chocolate sauce and enjoy!
