They’re a perfect treat for watching a movie or even making for a breakfast or brunch with friends.

What are dirt bombs?
We’ve been making dirt bombs for years, ad it wasn’t until we watched a recent episode of the Summer I Turned Pretty, that we were reminded of this delicious creation.
Each muffin made with a soft, spiced dough and then brushed or dipped in butter before they are rolled in cinnamon sugar. The outside of the muffin makes a cinnamon sugar crust that is actually irresistible.

How to make dirt bombs….
Muffins are so easy to make and these dirt bombs are no exception! Here’s the details!
Whisk dry ingredients first…
In a large bowl, add flour, baking powder, cinnamon and salt. Whisk the dry mixture until all the ingredients are incorporated.
Mix wet ingredients...
In a medium size bowl, mix eggs, sugar, butter, milk, vanilla and sour cream together. These ingredients are going to provide a lot of moisture to the muffins. Sour cream is our favorite addition to muffins and cakes because it gives the muffins a delicious crumb and a bit denser texture.

Combine flour mixture with wet ingredients…
Mix dry ingredients into the wet mixture. Mix until you have blended the dry ingredients into the wet and there aren’t any clumps of flour. Be careful not to over mix the muffins. You want to mix until just blended to avoid a tough muffin.
Fill muffin tins and bake!
Using an ice cream scoop or 1/4 measuring cup, scoop batter into a prepared muffin tin.
Bake on 350ºF for 18-22 minutes. Remove the muffins from the oven and let them cool completely.
Make cinnamon sugar coating…
Now to the best part… the cinnamon sugar coating. Once the muffins are cooled, you will brush or dip each one in melted butter and roll in a cinnamon sugar mixture until coated.
Make sure to let them set on a wire rack or plate for about 5 minutes to set the coating before enjoying.

Should I use muffin liners for dirt bombs?
We don’t recommend using muffin liners for the dirt bomb muffins because you will be rolling the entire muffin in cinnamon and sugar.
Make sure you grease the muffin tins with butter, getting into the corners of each well so that the muffins don’t stick.
How do you store muffins?
If you do not plan on eating the muffins the same day, they will be good for 3-4 days in an airtight container or ziplock at room temperature.
We don’t recommend freezing these muffins with cinnamon sugar coating. When you reheat the muffins the coating will not have the same texture. If you want to freeze the muffins for late use, we recommend coating the muffins after thawing.
