Creative Christmas Tree Ideas

Decorating our Christmas tree is something we look most forward to every year. We always make it such a cozy event by baking gingerbread cookies, sorting out the Christmas ornaments from the boxes and playing our favorite Christmas movies in the background.

We loved the pink and white ornament look for a few years, but are now leaning towards the nostalgic, eclectic feel this year. It’s always fun to switch things up. If you’re anything like us and are looking for a new ways to decorate your tree this year, we’ve got you covered. We’re sharing 12 beautiful and creative Christmas tree ideas for you to copy this year.

No matter how you choose to decorate, we guarantee you’ll feel like your the main character in a dreamy Hallmark movie!

Tips for Decorating Your Christmas Tree

1. Real Tree vs. Faux Tree

First, you have to decide whether you want a real or faux Christmas tree. Purchasing a real tree requires more upkeep, but there’s honestly nothing like it. Not only does it smell amazing, but it also is also looks amazing as well.

Faux trees on the other hand give you that look and feel of a Christmas tree, but depending on your budget, the quality, look and feel of the tree can differ. We’ve always had a faux tree in our home, and we love it.

Whichever option you choose is totally up to you. Weigh the pros and the cons and decide what’s best for your lifestyle and aesthetic of your home.

2. Choose a Theme

Once you have a tree, it’s time to choose a theme. There are so many color schemes and themes your can choose from. After deciding a theme, you can then purchase the ornaments and other decoration to achieve the look and feel you’re wanting.

Here are some popular Christmas tree themes to choose from:

  • White and Gold Christmas Tree
  • Red, Green and Gold Christmas Tree
  • Pink and White Christmas Tree
  • Neutral Christmas Tree Decor
  • Black and White Christmas Tree
  • Blue and Silver Christmas Tree
  • Glamor Christmas Tree
  • Whimsical Christmas Tree
  • Gingerbread Christmas Tree
  • Barbie Christmas Tree
  • Snowman Christmas Tree
  • Festive Foodie Christmas Tree

4. Make Decorating Fun and Memorable

Every year, we dedicate one night to decorating our Christmas tree. We bake some gingerbread cookies, turn on a Hallmark Christmas movie and begin! We start by unboxing and laying out all our Christmas ornaments and other decor that goes on the tree. Then we follow this layering process to make the most beautiful tree.

The exact decorating process we use to decorate our tree:

  • String Lights: The first step is to string lights on your tree. If you have a real tree this is a must, but even if you have a pre-lit faux tree, you may want to do this as well. There are two reasons we do this every year:
If any of the lights on the tree are out, we fill in with a new strand of lights.
Even if all the lights work, we love adding small globe light stands to our Christmas tree. It adds dimension to the tree and makes it look even more beautiful.
  • Add Ribbon or Other Decor: If you have ribbon or other large, lengthy decor that needs to be hung on the tree, do that next. You want to make sure all the main decoration is added before hanging the ornaments.
  • Hang the Ornaments: The next step is to hang your ornaments in the tree. There is no rhyme or reason to doing this, however make sure you distribute the ornaments evenly. Adding a large ornament here and there, then other smaller ornaments around. Varying sizes of ornaments in different places around the tree will make it look more curated and professionally decorated.
  • Decorate Below the Tree: Lastly, it’s time to add a tree skirt, basket or blanket to wrap around the bottom of the tree. A tree skirt or collar will help hide that ugly faux tree stand. Then add some wrapped presents under the tree to complete your decorating.
