Ahhh winter…the season that has us bundled in our house, drinking too many hot lattes and bundled in cozy layers to stay warm. It’s not the most delightful season, but there are so many exciting things to make it worth while. 

To make the most of a season we don’t enjoy all the time, picking up a new hobby or hobbies always boosts our mood and gives us something to look forward to. If you’re looking to try something new this winter, we’re sharing 16 cozy hobbies that will help you escape the winter blues.

1. Set a Reading Goal

We love to read, but other things get in the way and we find it so difficult to carve out time to actually sit down, relax and start a novel. This winter, we’re taking our own advice and setting a reading goal so that reading is a natural hobby we gravitate towards throughout the year.

Whether you want to read one, two or three books every month, winter is the perfect time to start while you’re spending more time indoors.

2. Bake

Whether it’s during or after the holidays, we love any excuse to get in the kitchen and bake a new recipe. Everything from thick bakery-style cookies, to angle food cake and bread — there are so many great things to try.

3. Take Pilates at Home

If you’ve been putting off trying pilates, this is your sign to try it. It can seem intimidating in the beginning, but it’s become one of our main forms of movement throughout the week. You’ll be amazed at how strong and energized you’ll feel after each workout.

The best part is that you can do it 100% from your home. We love Move with Nicole’s pilates workout videos. She does such a great job with instructing and creating a great workout for just about any length of time or area you want to target.

4. Cook a New Recipe a Week

One of the best ways to improve your cooking skills is to try a new recipe every week. Whether you make your way through one cookbook or test a recipe you found on Pinterest, you’ll be surprised at how fun this could be. 

5. Learn a New Language

One hobby we’re planning on trying this winter is learning a new language. With Duolingo, there’s so many languages you can learn and it makes it easy to study the language on the go, at home or when you travel.

6. Take an Online Course

We love taking online courses when we want to further our skills in a certain topic. There are so many different subjects and topics of online courses out there. They all range in prices, so it’s important to research the best and most cost effective courses for the budget and time you’re wanting to spend.

7. Start a Cookbook Club

Are you looking for a hobby to invite your friends to participate in? If so, starting a cookbook club perfect. It’s such a great opportunity to try new recipes, hang out with friends and increase your culinary and entertaining skills.

8. Take a Cookie Decorating Class

Maybe it’s the cute videos of women decorating cookies that make us want to learn the art, but we’ve become obsessed with cookie decorating. It’s such a stunning process to watch.

9. Crochet

11. Start an Indoor Herb Garden

If you’re missing your summer garden this time of year, bring life into your home with an herb garden. You can DIY your own indoor herb garden or get fancy with it.

12. Sewing

We’ve taken a few introductory sewing classes before and it was so fun a rewarding to create something with our own hands. In the winter, you could learn to sew a cute top, a blanket or a cute decorative pillow cover.

We’ve recently started playing Mahjong as an alternative to watching movies at night. It’s pretty challenging at first to grasp all the rules, but once you understand it you’ll be addicted to playing it. It’s become our favorite game to play with our family and friends.
