Apple Cheddar Scones with Honey Glaze

One thing about us is that we love scones. They are one of our favorite breakfast or brunch foods out there! We love trying new flavors of scones from our local bakeries, as well as new bakeries when we travel.

One year, when we were visiting New York City, we went to a small coffee shop that served the most delicious cheddar apple scones. The scone was flaky and buttery and had cheddar cheese and soft apple pieces in it.

As strange as an apple cheddar scone may sound, it’s a traditional New England flavor combination. We promise you, you’ll be obsessed!

Inspired by the pastry in New York City, we wanted to see if we could recreate it with a bit of our own twist. These Apple Cheddar Scones are made with a delicious buttermilk dough with cheddar cheese and honey crisp apple bits folded in, and topped with a sweet honey glaze.

These scones are the perfect sweet and savory pastry to make for your next breakfast with family, brunch with friends or on a cozy weekend morning for you and a your roommate!

What’s in this recipe?

All Purpose Flour: We added 2 1/4 cups of all-purpose flour to this scone recipe. This will add the perfect texture and structure to your dough.

Sugar: The sugar helps to sweeten the scone dough and balance the savoriness of the cheddar cheese.

Baking Powder: Baking powder helps the scones rise and makes them puffier too.

Salt: A bit of salt is added to help accentuate the other flavors in the apple cheddar scones.

Cold Butter: Cold butter is essential in scones. Much like biscuits, the cold butter is important, because it creates pockets of butter and steam—creating a lighter, more flavorful scone.

Heavy Cream: Heavy cream is a thicker liquid that gives these scones a richer flavor.

Egg: One egg is added to the scone dough and another is whisked to brush on the top of the scones.

Vanilla: We added a bit of vanilla flavor to these scones, because it pairs well and intensifies the flavor profile as well.

Honey Crisp Apples: Honey Crisp Apples are our favorite apples to use. In this recipe in particular, they add a sweeter flavor that blanches the savoriness of the cheddar cheese.

Cheddar Cheese: Sharp cheddar cheese is what adds such a delicious savory flavor to these scones.

Powdered Sugar: Powdered sugar is the base of the honey glaze. It adds delicious sweetness and more can be added if you want a thicker consistency.

Honey: A bit of honey is added to the glaze to give it a delicious honey flavor.

Milk: Milk is added to the glaze to thin it out. If you want a thinner glaze, add a teaspoon at a time until it’s the consistency you like.

How to Make Apple Cheddar Scones

These scones are so delicious, and have become one of our go-to flavors to make. They are the perfect balance of sweet and savory that we love. Plus, they are the perfect scones to serve at a brunch with friends or to make for family on the weekends!

Mix the Dry Ingredients…

To start, you’ll need a medium or large mixing bowl (we love these), to mix the dry ingredients. Use a whisk to combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.

Cube and Cut the Butter…

Now, it’s time to add the ingredient that needs no introduction…butter! To make delicious pockets of butter in your scones, you’ll need to use cold butter. Cube the cold butter into 1/2 inch cubes.

Add the cubed butter to the dry mixture and cut it into the mixture with a pastry cutter or fork. Cut the butter in the mixture until small pea-sized crumbs. Transfer the mixture to the fridge while you combine the wet ingredients.

Whisk Heavy Cream, Egg and Vanilla…

While the butter-flour mixture is staying chilled in the fridge, whisk the heavy cream, egg and vanilla in a small mixing bowl.

Then, peel and chop the honey crisp apples into tiny apple bits. Grate the sharp cheddar cheese and set it aside.

Combine the Dough and Chill…

Remove the flour-butter mixture from the fridge. Add the wet ingredients to the flour mixture and fold in the apple bits and cheddar cheese. Mix the dough until just combined.

Flour a flat surface and turn the dough out. Sprinkle the top with a bit more flour and roll the mixture until it’s about 1 1/2 to 2 inches thick. Using a biscuit cutter, cut the scone dough into rounds. Once you’ve used all the scone dough, transfer the scones to a parchment lined baking sheet and place in the fridge to chill for 10 more minutes.

Bake the Scones…

While the scones are chilling, preheat the oven to 400°F. Whisk one egg in a small mixing bowl to use for the egg wash.

After 10 minutes has passed, take the scone out of the fridge, brush the tops with egg wash and bake for 18-25 minutes.

Make the Honey Glaze…

While the scones are baking, it’s time to make the honey glaze. Whisk the powdered sugar, honey and milk together. If the mixture is too thin, add more powdered sugar. If the glaze is too thick, add a tablespoon of milk at a time.

Once the scones are baked, let them cool for 5 minutes and then drizzle the glaze to the top.

Serve with a hot cappuccino or cup of tea. Enjoy with friends and family!
