How to Paint Terracotta Pots
Step 1: Clean Your Pots
First things first, clean your pots with soap and water. Let the pot completely dry before moving forward. This will ensure that the surface is in the best shape to start the painting process.
Step 2: Base Coat (If Needed)
If you’d like to apply a base coat or paint color to your pot, now is the time to do so. Apply 2-3 thin coats of acrylic paint to the pot and let each coat try completely before adding your design.
Step 3: Decorate + Paint Your Design
Now it’s time for the fun part — decorating your pot with the design you’ve chosen. Whether you choose somethinggeometrical, abstract, or any other cute design, use different brushes, sponges, and materials to make it come to life.
Step 4: Let the Paint Dry
Once you’re done painting your pot, let the design dry for at least 24 hours. If you’re hosting a party, maybe have your friends paint the pot and take it home to finish drying before moving on to the last step.
Step 5: Seal the Pot
If you plan to place your painted pot on your front porch or in an outside garden, weather-proofing the pot is an essential step. Apply 2-3 coats of outdoor sealant to the pot. This will help preserve the design of the pot a lot longer and help it withstand seasonal weather.
