Sukie’s Ham and Cheese Slider Pull Apart Bread. Made with layers of delicious, sweet Hawaiian roll dough, Swiss cheese, ham slices and baked in a buttery, seasoned sauce.

Ham and Cheese Slider Pull Apart Bread

Our extended family is huge, so growing up, we always had to find easy recipes to make when we all got together. Our second-cousin Sukie would always make several large trays of these delicious Hawaiian roll ham and cheese sliders.

We always knew she would come through with these sandwiches every time we visited, so they are infamously dubbed “Sukie’s Sandwiches”. Although the recipe is not hers, it has become quite the popular food to serve for large gatherings, football game days and house parties.

We thought it would be a fun idea to take the delicious flavors of the ham and cheese sliders and create a pull-apart bread. The bread is made with layers of sweet Hawaiian roll dough, Swiss cheese and ham bits and baked in a buttery, seasoned sauce that makes the bread super flavorful and crispy on the bottom.

It tastes just like the classic ham and cheese sliders, but it’s even more fun, because you can pull apart however much you’d like. It’s the PERFECT appetizer for a cool, fall afternoon watching a football game or hosting friends over for a game night!

What is pull apart bread made of?

Pull apart bread is made with layers of buttery dough and filling. For this ham and cheese slider pull apart bread, we layered Hawaiian roll dough, Swiss cheese and ham to create a beautiful and delicious bread.

Before baking in the over, we poured the buttery seasoned sauce over the top to give the bread extra flavor and create a crispy bottom.

Homemade Hawaiian Roll Dough

This ham and cheese pull apart bread wouldn’t be near as good without the Hawaiian roll dough. For this recipe, the dough has to be homemade to create the decadent layers. Although it adds some time to the process, it’s so worth it!

Hawaiian roll dough is a delicious sweet dough, but what gives it the unique flavor is pineapple juice! How cool is that? To be honest, we didn’t know that was the unique ingredient in the dough until we made it for the first time.

The Butter Sauce

The last step before making the pull apart bread is to pour the butter sauce over the dough. The sauce is made of butter, dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce and other seasonings. The flavors of the sauce pair beautifully with the other ingredients and once baked, it helps to create a crispy edge to the bottom of the dough.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Hawaiian Roll Dough

  • 1/2 cup milk (warmed to 110 degrees)
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup butter (melted and cooled slightly)
  • 1 cup pineapple juice (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 2 eggs (lightly whisked)
  • 4 1/2 bread flour

Pull Apart Dough Filling and Sauce

  • 1/2 lb deli ham (sliced in small 1 inch bits)
  • 1 pkg Swiss cheese slices (sliced in half)
  • 1/2 cup butter (melted)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp poppyseeds
  • 1/2 tsp dried minced onion

Egg wash

  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp water

Instructions

Hawaiian Roll Dough

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer, add warm milk, yeast and sugar. Mix together and let it sit for 5 minutes to bubble.
  2. Then, add butter, pineapple juice, brown sugar, salt, vanilla and eggs. Mix together with a wooden spoon or spatula. Add two cups of flour to the bowl and mix until just incorporated.
  3. Add the dough hook on the stand mixer and mix the rest of the flour until a sticky dough begins to form. It should come together pretty quickly.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover and let it rise for 2 hours. Once doubled in size, punch the dough and roll it out onto a floured surface. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out into a 9×13 rectangle.
  5. Using a pizza cutter, cut the dough lengthwise once. Then cut the two 4.5×13 strips into 12 equal rectangular pieces.

Sauce

  1. In a small mixing bowl, add melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, dijon mustard, poppyseeds and minced garlic. Whisk until ingredients are combined.

Make the Layers and Bake

  1. Butter a 19×3 baking dish and preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. To make the layers, it helps to work in smaller chunks as you add the layers to the dish. Layer in this order: piece of Hawaiian roll dough, Swiss cheese, ham bits, Hawaiian roll dough. Repeat this step a few more times and transfer the layers to the baking dish. Keep making layers and transferring them to the dish until the dish is full.
  3. Pour the butter sauce over the top of the layers. Bake for 20 minutes, remove the bread and top with the egg wash. Place the bread back in the oven for 25-30 more minutes. Remove from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes.
  4. Serve and enjoy!
