When we moved into our first apartment in college, we were looking for inexpensive ways to design our bedroom. First, adding unique lighting to your space can be affordable and elevate any room. When you add elegant light fixtures to any space—especially in an apartment that may lack character—it will make the room feel more intentional. Sconces create soft light to illuminate the room and create contrast in your room.
We love how sconces can frame a gallery wall above a couch, in a living room. Another way to use sconces are the frame your bed. Placing sconces above night stands on either side of your bed make your room look so elegant and inviting.

Another way to decorate your space on a budget is to create your own floating shelves. These are so simple to make, install and personalize. We have made and installed floating shelves in nearly all the apartments we have lived in. They make a smaller home or apartment feel more open, while providing some storage and styling opportunities.
Buying floating shelves, is a waste of money when you can make them yourself and save money! All you will need is a plank (or planks) of wood to fill your space, and some brackets. Depending on how long of a board you have, you will have to adjust the number of brackets you will need.
You can find wood at your local Home Depot, Lowes, or hardware store. If you are in search for some aesthetic brackets for your shelves, these are ones we recommend! However, if making floating shelves is not your cup of tea, we found some more affordable floating shelf options at Target!
