Thanksgiving Leftovers Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

Best Bread for Grilled Cheese

The best bread for a grilled cheese really comes down to preference, but we have rounded up several of our tried-and-true favorites that check the boxes for flavor, versatility and quality.

  • Sourdough: Very flavorful and tangy pairs well with most cheeses.
  • French bread: The texture of French bread is a bit chewier, but the flavor.
  • Artisan bread: Homemade bread is our personal favorite and we always love supporting local bakeries.

Tips for the perfect Grilled Cheese

  • Cook low and Slow: Cook over medium-low heat to slowly melt the cheese and not burn the bread.
  • Generously butter the bread: Buttering the bread will give your sandwich a delicious flavor and also a nice crispy browning.
  • Perfect ratio of cheese to bread: Just adding cheese? Stick with 1.5-2 slices. Adding more fillings - 2-2.5 slices and layer cheese between the add ins to help binding everything together.

What you will need to make the thanksgiving leftover grilled cheese sandwich…

French baguette - A chewy bread that is full of flavor and has sweet notes to it which complement the sweet and savory fillings.

Turkey Slices - You can’t have a thanksgiving sandwich without the turkey!!

Cranberry Sauce -  Adds an extra sweetness and tang to the sandwich that is delicious.

Arugula - Adds a peppery flavor to the sandwiches. If you don’t have arugula, you can swap for spinach!

Provolone - Provolone has a very buttery taste and is a bit salty as well. We found it one of our favorite pairings with the thanksgiving leftovers.

Poultry Seasoning - We added a blend of thyme and rosemary which are common in thanksgiving dishes. It adds a burst of flavor in every bite.

Description

Turkey, cranberry sauce, poultry seasonings, fresh greens and provolone between two slices of buttered French bread to make a refreshing lunch out of thanksgiving leftovers.

Ingredients

Scale

1 2 foot long French bread baguette

2 slices of thick turkey

2 spoonfuls of cranberry sauce

1 handful of arugula

2 slices of provolone

1/2 tbsp fresh rosemary, chopped

1/2 tbsp fresh thyme, chopped

Instructions

  1. Slice a 2 foot long baguette into 6” pieces and slice each in half to build your sandwich.
  2. Heat skillet over medium heat. Next, butter the outside of bread with small amount of butter.
  3. Place a slice on skillet and start layering your sandwich with the fillings. You can follow this order to make a good cheese to filling ratio. ( 1. bread, 2. provolone 3. turkey 4. cranberry sauce 5. 1/2 slice provolone 6. arugula and spices 7. More provolone 8. top with another slice of buttered bread)
  4. Let the sandwich heat up making sure not to burn the bottom slice while melting the cheese. You may need to adjust the heat to make sure you melt the cheese and not burn the bread.
  5. Once cheese has started to melt and meld the sandwich fillings together, carefully flip over with spatula and cook on opposite side until cheese is gooey and bread is toasted.
  6. Remove from heat, slice in half and enjoy! Serve with other leftovers like sweet potato casserole and green beans
