This post is all about how to style a twin bed in a small bedroom. Knowing how to style a twin bed for an adult bedroom, guest room or dorm room, is important when you are shopping for bedding and designing your room.

When we moved into our first small apartment, we were living in a one bedroom unit. We needed to make the space functional for the both of us, while still having space to move around.

While having a twin bed isn’t always ideal, we knew that it was the best option for our space. We each needed a space to sleep, and having one bedroom limited us in space.

That being said, we fully embraced the idea of having a twin bed as an adult. We knew that we wanted to style the bed to make it look sophisticated, and appropriate for our age.

When styling twin beds, there are pros and cons, and a few of things to keep in mind as you’re styling a bed of a smaller size.

This post is all about how to style twin beds.

The Pros and Cons of Having a Twin Bed

We honestly have found more pros than cons when it comes to having a twin bed. It truly comes down to preference and the space you are working with.

Pros:

  • They are a perfect bed size for multiple people living in a small space (like an apartment in a big city)
  • Twin beds more affordable, being smaller in size
  • They can still be styled to look like they were made for an adult
  • They are a great option for a guest bedroom, dorm room or small apartment

Cons:

  • They are small in size, so if you like a mattress with more room, you may not be a fan of a twin mattress

3 Things to Keep in Mind When You Are Styling Twin Beds

1. Keep Beds Equal Distance Apart

When arranging twin beds in your room, you will want to center them on a wall in your bedroom. We recommend separating the two beds with a nightstand or dresser in the middle.

Placing a piece of wall art above the nightstand helps to center and ground the space as well.

2. The Number of Pillows Matters

Adding too many pillows to your twin bed will make it appear super crowded.

Even though we like a lot of pillows on our bed, adding too many on a twin bed can be too much. Our formula for the perfect twin bed is:

1 Euro sham + 1 regular sham + 1-2 decorative pillows

Following this formula opens up your small space and allows you to keep the headboard more visible as well.

3. Bedding Choice is Important

If you have more than one twin bed in your room, we recommend keeping the bedding the same, if not super similar in color scheme. You’ll also want to choose bedding that tis reflective your personal design style.

Keep the duvet, euro sham and regular shame the same on each bed, and then have more fun with the smaller decorative pillows. You can add the same decorative pillows to each bed, or switch it up with different textures and patters.

Pro tip: The more minimal the bedding is, the bigger and brighter your small bedroom will feel.

How to Style Twin Beds in a Small Bedroom

When styling the twin beds in our bedroom, we knew we wanted to keep the bedding the same. We have the same style and vision for the space, so it made sense for us.

First, we each bought the same iron bed frame. We thought it was a more modern take on the farm house iron bed frames. We are obsessed with the contrast the dark charcoal head board brings to the space.

Next, we added an oatmeal colored duvet as the base for our twin bedding. Since we had a smaller space, we thought that a light color of bedding was the best choice to keep the room bright and open.

Then, we layered our pillows. We bought these GORGEOUS euro shams from Amber Interior’s line at Anthropologie. Our personal design style is a mix of English cottage, modern and traditional elements, and we thought that these patterned euro shams paid homage to the European side of our style.

We placed an oatmeal-colored sham in from of the euro sham that matched the duvet.

Lastly, we layered the bed with a woven mauve decorative lumbar pillow. This pillow added personality, texture and a new dimension to the bed.

We loved how our beds turned out! The way we styled our twin beds keeps the space open, bright and reflective of our own personal style.
