We were craving something cozy for the cooler weather, and may we present to you homemade pumpkin spice cinnamon rolls. A sweet warm rolls full of warm spices and pumpkin butter to make one of the yummiest breakfast treat this fall. You’re sure to get a comforting taste of fall in every bite!

Is your mouth watering yet? We can’t seem to get enough pumpkin spice this year and are having fun experimenting with different recipes. This week we played around with adding pumpkin butter to our classic cinnamon roll recipe and we have to say we’re slightly obsessed with this creation. You’ll want to keep this recipe in your pocket for the rest of the season.

Don’t be fooled by the amount of ingredients in this recipe, because it is easier than it looks.And makes a large batch which makes it perfect for a family breakfast, fall brunch with friends or fun treat to share with neighbors.

The secret ingredient?

Pumpkin butter is the key ingredient to adding the rich pumpkin spice flavor that we all crave during fall. Normally during the fall months, you can find jars of pumpkin butter at your local super market. The pumpkin butter adds a moistness to the rolls and as it cooks, it caramelizes with the cinnamon sugar making a delicious gooey filling.

What’s in the sweet dough?

Milk: We like to use alternative milk (like almond milk) in our baked goods, because we often don’t have real milk on hand. Feel free yo use any of milk you would like!

Sugar: The half a cup of sugar adds sweetness and helps to activate the yeast in the dough.

Salt: Salt is used to balance out the sweetness in the dough.

Butter: The butter makes the dough so decadent and light.

Dry Yeast: This recipe uses 2 packets of dry yeast.

Warm Water: The warm water helps to activate the yeast and add moisture to the dough.

Eggs: Eggs are used to stabilize the sweet dough.

All-purpose flour: You will use 6 1/2 cups of flour in this recipe. It may seem like a lot, but the dough is still super moist and sticky.

What’s in the cinnamon pumpkin butter filling?

Brown sugar: Brown sugar is traditional in cinnamon roll filling, and gives this a delicious sweet filling.

Sugar: You will also add a cup of white sugar to this filling as well.

Butter: We cut our sticks of butter into thirds so that they would bend easier in the stand mixer.

Flour:  Flour in the filling is unique to this recipe. It helps to thicken the cinnamon roll filling.

Cinnamon: This is what gives the cinnamon roll it’s name! We are obsessed with cinnamon, so we always add more than is called for in the recipe.

Pumpkin Butter: The pumpkin butter spread on top of the cinnamon filling adds a moistness to the rolls and as it cooks, it caramelizes with the cinnamon sugar making a delicious gooey filling.

What’s in the cream cheese icing?

Cream cheese: Cream cheese adds a tangy flavor, and is just the perfect flavor of icing for cinnamon rolls

Butter:  Yes, more butter, but it makes the icing taste super yummy.

Powdered Sugar: Powdered sugar adds sweetness and is a super simple base to make a delicious icing.

Vanilla: The vanilla flavor elevates the flavor of this icing.

Best served with a cappuccino or hot cup of tea! It makes the perfect balance to the yummy richness of these rolls.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Sweet Dough

  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 packets dry yeast
  • 1/3 cup warm water
  • 3 eggs (room temp)
  • 6 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice

Pumpkin Pie Spice Filling

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 1/2 tbsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 cup pumpkin butter

Cream Cheese Icing

  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 6 tbsp butter (softened)
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice


Instructions

Sweet Dough

  1. Combine milk, sugar, salt, and butter in a small saucepan. heat over low heat until the butter and sugar dissolve. Cool to lukewarm.
  2. Dissolve yeast in warm water in a warmed bowl. Add milk mixture, eggs, pumpkin pie spice and 5 cups of flour. Beat with a dough hook on speed 2 for 3 minutes.
  3. Continuing at speed 2, add the rest of the flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until the dough clings to the hook and cleans the sides of the bowl. Knead on speed 2 for 5 more minutes.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl. Cover and let rise in a warm place until it's doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  5. After 1 hour, punch the dough down and shape into a 10 x 30 x 1 inch rectangle.

Cinnamon Pumpkin Butter Filling

  1. Place brown sugar, sugar, butter, flour and pumpkin spice in a mixer bowl. Mix with a flat beater on speed 2 for 1 minute.
  2. Spread the cinnamon sugar filling evenly over the dough. Then spread a layer of the pumpkin butter over the cinnamon sugar mixture. Roll the dough tightly from long side to form a 30 inch roll, pinching seams together. Cut into 18 1 1/2 inch slices.
  3. Place rolls in a greased cake pans, cover and let rise in a warm space for 1 hour.
  4. Bake at 350 F for about 20 minutes.

Pumpkin Spice Cream Cheese Icing

  1. In a stand mixing bowl, mix cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, pumpkin pie spice and vanilla until it's completely combined.
  2. Once the rolls have cooled for 5 minutes, smear the icing over the top.
  3. Enjoy with a cappuccino or hot cup of tea.
