Fall is often marked by the start of the school year, cooler temperatures, and a a reset of routines that keep you indoors more often. There’s just something about seasons changing that make us feel motivated to try new things — especially in the fall. 

Not only is it our favorite season, but it’s also the official season of all things warm and cozy things. To make the most of the season we’re chaining up how we spend our downtime and looking for opportunity to try new hobbies in the process.

1. Reading

There’s truly nothing like reading in the fall. Curl up in a cozy chair, throw over a blanket and start reading with a hot cup of coffee in hand. It’s the perfect indoor activity that will allow you to escape reality for a moment and hop into the pages of a new book.

2. Baking

Fall is the unofficial, official season of baking. Everything from pumpkin bread, apple cider donuts, chocolate chip cookies and pies. There are endless recipes you could make this season.

3. Building Lego Sets

Building Legos was never something I imagined myself doing, but Lego has started releasing so many fun sets that I can’t help myself. They have everything from framed art pieces you can hang on your wall, flower bouquets, and (my personal favorite) The Office set.

4. Making Sourdough Bread

Making sourdough bread has become a huge trend over the past several years, and fall is a great time to learn how. It is a lengthier process, but there’s something meditative and fun about making your own bread. Plus, who doesn’t love a delicious fresh loaf of bread?!

5. Board Games

Grab your family and friends learn a new board game or host a weekly game night. When we’re looking for a different activity than sitting and watching TV at night, playing a board game is our go-to. Here are some fun games to play this fall:

  • Ticket to Ride

6. Sewing

We’ve taken a few introductory sewing classes before and it was so fun a rewarding to create something with our own hands. In the fall, you could learn to sew a cute top, a skirt or a cute decorative pillow cover.

  • Look for sewing courses online

7. Make Cozy Tie Blankets

We used to make tie blankets all the time, and this year we’re bringing it back. They are super easy to make and it’s a great excuse to gather your friends for a cute girls night in.

Everyone can bring their own fabric and some fabric scissors. Light some cozy candles, serve some snacks and turn on a cozy fall movie while you make your blankets.

8. Journaling

Much like reading, journaling also goes to the wayside in the summer. However fall, is a great time to pick it up again. Whether you journal in the morning to start your day, find time to doodle in the afternoon or take the time in the evening to process the day you had — it has a way of making you feel better.

9. Painting

Want to lean into your more artistic side? Try taking a painting class or following a painting video on Youtube. There’s something so meditative about painting that makes it perfect for a fall day inside.

10. Making Pottery

Taking a pottery class and actually becoming good at it has been a goal of ours for a long time. If you’ve been wanting to try your hand at it, fall is such a great time to do it. You can learn to make a cute mug for your homemade lattes at home or a cute bowl to serve soup in on a cold day.

11. Adult Coloring

If you’re looking for a low-key, relaxing hobby to start, you may want to consider adult coloring. There are so many cute adult colozbooks out there. Our personal favorite books for fall are this New York themed coloring book and this cozy home coloring book.

12. Hiking

We can’t imagine a better time of year to hike than fall. The leaves are turning beautiful colors and the air is cool and crisp. Grab your hiking shoes, leggings and layers to take on the outdoors and the scenery.

13. Take a Coffee Making Course

One thing we have always wanted to perfect is the art of making a beautiful design in a latte. A unique hobby to start would be to take a coffee making course. There’s an online barista training that you can join for a monthly fee of $15.

14. Make Mulled Wine

Mulled wine is one of our favorite drinks to serve with dinner in the fall. We first tasted it at a French restaurant in New York City several years ago and were immediately obsessed.

There are so many different variations of how you can make it when it comes to kind of wine, spices and seasonings. Have fun with it and find a drink you truly love.

15. Make A Stovetop Potpourri 

We have a tradition of making stovetop potpourri every since we were gifted it one year as a gift. Not only is it so easy to make, but it’s one of our favorite ways to make our home smell good in the fall. All you need are a few spices, fruit and herbs to make the delicious smelling aroma.

16. Take a Cookie Decorating Class

Maybe it’s the cute videos of women decorating cookies that make us want to learn the art, but we’ve become obsessed with cookie decorating. It’s such a stunning process to watch.
