How to Make Easy New York Style Bagels

Make the Bagel Dough:

Start by pouring warm water and yeast to a bowl, but do not stir together. Let the yeast sit for 5 minutes and let it proof. Once the yeast is bubbled a bit, stir to combine.

Next, dd bread flour, maple syrup and salt to the yeast mixture. Using a stand mixer, beat on a speed of 2 for two minutes. The dough will look a little dry at this point.

After the dough has formed, remove the dough from the mixer bowl and place onto a floured surface. Knead the dough for 5 minutes with your hands. Lightly grease a bowl by pouring a small amount of olive oil onto your hands and rubbing all around the inside surface of the bowl. Next, place the dough ball in the greased bowl. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and allow the dough to rise in a warm area for 1 hour or until it’s doubled in size.

Prep Dough and Form Your Bagels

Once the dough has doubled in size, uncover and punch it down with your fist. Then, roll the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and divide the dough into 8 even sized balls. Using your thumb, punch a hole through the middle and shape the dough into a bagel. Let the dough rest for a few minutes.

Boil and Bake the Bagels

Start by preheating your oven to 425°F.  Next, fill a large pot with 10-12 cups of water. Whisk in the honey and baking soda and bring the water to a boil. The honey and baking soda help to make that crunchy crust on the outside of the bagel and help to turn a caramel brown in the oven. Drop 2 bagels in at a time and cook the bagels 1 minute on each side. Transfer the bagels to the prepared baking sheet, brush with egg wash and sprinkle with Everything But The Bagel seasoning.

Bake the bagels in the oven for 12 minutes, rotate the pan and bake for 12 more minutes. The bagels should be golden brown in color. Remove them from the oven and let them cool for 15 minutes. Enjoy with your favorite cream cheese and cup of hot coffee or tea.
