This post is all about a cozy cottage bedroom design.
It’s been about 8 years since our parent moved out of our childhood home and into the home they currently live in. It’s a beautiful, cozy home, but they are finally ready for a some changes.
With most basic new-builds in a suburb neighborhood, there are a few architectural details that make it unique from other homes on the street. The first space our mom wanted help with was their primary bedroom.
It’s a fairly large room, with a large window—making it a great primary bedroom. However, it does lack their personal style.
We wanted to lean into the cozy cottage feel of the rest of the home, and reflect that style in their bedroom as well. We’re sharing all the design details for this project below!

Cozy Cottage Bedroom Design
Before:
Right now, our parents bedroom has some beautiful, well-built furniture, but it doesn’t truly reflect their design style. It’s much more elegant than they would like, so we’re going to repurpose one of their existing dressers and keep the large cream chair for the corner.
There isn’t one designated style for this space, so making it all feel cohesive and cozy is our main goal.

The Renderings of the Cozy Cottage Bedroom Design
To start, we’d like to clear out all the furniture and create an architectural moment on the back wall where their bed is going to be centered. We want to create a board and batten detail that will define this space as soon as you walk in.
Painting the walls a creamy white (Swiss Coffee by Benjamin Moore) will brighten the space too.
We wanted to replace their existing head board with a simple, upholstered headboard that’s covered in a smokey grey fabric to contrast the newly white walls. Styling the bed with pops Sienna clay euro shams, patterned decorative pillows and textured linens will make it super cozy. Above the bed, we will hang a calming ocean print to draw your eye up.
On either side of the bed, we’ll add two black nightstands and matching table lamps to create symmetry in the space.
Our parents can consolidate their clothing into one dresser, so we opted to keep the shorter, longer dresser in the same place. The plan is to strip the stain, sand and retain this piece to a lighter finish (similar to the dresser in the concept board above). We will also replace the existing elegant, brass pulls with something more modern. Doing this will totally transform the look and feel of the space.
Placing a round mirror and some other decorative pieces above and on the dresser, respectively, will create curated look for this space.
Finally, we plan to add cream curtains to the windows. This alone will make the space feel cozier and more inviting. In the corner, we’ll place their white chair and brass floor lamp to create a cozy reading nook.
We truly believe this space will become a place our parents will truly love, and everything will feel beautiful and inviting.
