How to pick the perfect avocado

Picking the best avocados at the store can seem like a gambling game. But here are some tips we have for picking the best avocado.

  1. Give the avocado a gentle squeeze. If the avocado feels a bit soft, it is ripe. If the avocado is hard, it needs more time to ripen. If you feel any super mushy spots or almost air pockets, the avocado may be too ripe.
  2. Pay attention to the skin color. Bright green avocados are not ripe. Dark green – black avocados are too ripe.
  3. Find smoothest avocados with a little bit of green. This method may be a tall tale and isn’t always reliable, but to date we have had success finding good avocados this way.
  4. Look at the stems. The avocado is too ripe if you can not remove the stem. A ripe avocado will have a yellow-green stem color. An overly ripe avocado will be brown in color.
  5. Look for Hass avocados. They often have a creamier texture and nutty taste that is delicious in guacamole.

Tricks for Ripening Avocados

We’ve all been there… You go to the store and all the avocados on the shelf are hard as rocks. Well we have some tricks for speeding the ripening of your avocados. There are quite a few tips floating on the internet but these are our favorite ways to ripen avocados

  1. Place on a windowsill. This is a super easy way to speed up the ripening of an avocado. The warmth of the sunlight will quicken the ripening.
  2. Brown paper bag with a banana or apple. I know it sounds strange, but as bananas and apples ripen, they release ethylene gas which causes the avocado to ripen quicker.

How to Easily Slice an Avocado

Slicing avocados can be tricky but we have some tips for safely cutting an avocado to avoid any injury.

  1. Using the tip of a sharp knife or an avocado slicer, slice the avocado, starting at the stem and continue the slice the avocado in half lengthwise.
  2. Twist and pull each half away from each other to divide the halves.
  3. Place the half with the pit on a cutting board. Using your sharp knife, hit the pit of the avocado. If you are using an avocado slicer, hit the pit with the pitter.
  4. Hold the avocado in one hand and your knife in the other. Gently twist the knife. The pit should come out cleanly.
  5. Using your knife, carefully slice the avocado in the shell, careful not to cut through the shell.
  6. Scoop out the insides with a spoon.

Can I add canned tomatoes instead of fresh?

Yes, but you may come out with a different texture. If you do use canned tomatoes, make sure you drain the can very well.

We use fresh Roma tomatoes in our recipe to manage the moisture content. You don’t want too much moisture sitting in you guac, and Roma tomatoes typically have less moisture than their counterparts.
