It’s mid-October, the leaves a re FINALLY turning into gorgeous hues of red, gold and amber and we couldn’t be happier! With cozy fall light streaming into our windows in the morning, we can’t help ourselves from taking the opportunity to make delicious fall breakfasts.
Whether that be pumpkin bread or scones, you can’t go wrong, but there’s just something so special about a warm apple fritter on a chilly fall morning. Paired with a hot cappuccino, it becomes such a cozy, delectable treat!
We wanted to create an apple fritter with all the flavors of fall in it—that’s why we decided on maple bourbon apple fritters. They are a tad bit boozy, because we snuck some bourbon into the glaze. They are the PERFECT fall breakfast item for a brunch with your girl friends on the weekend or for a cozy morning treat with the family.
This may be one of our favorite recipes to date—you’re going to love them!
Maple Bourbon Apple Fritters
What is an apple fritter?
Apple fritters are the most perfect fall donut. It’s a deep-fried dough that’s filled with sweet apple pieces and cinnamon. Once fried and cooled a bit, it’s covered with a thin, sweet cinnamon glaze.
What are apple fritters made of?
Apple fritters are made of super simple ingredients, that include:
*These maple bourbon apple fritters have the delicious additional ingredients: bourbon.*
Is frying donuts easy?
To be honest, frying things has become a new favorite thing of ours to get good at. It’s come pretty easy to us, because we are in the kitchen a TON and have some experience with hot oil and cooking on the stove top.
Frying things in oil on the stovetop should be done with caution, but once you have practice with it, it’s super fun and becomes such an easy process.
Frying donuts is a great thing to fry when you first start out because donuts are lightweight, making them easy to turn and remove from the hot oil. It’s honestly sooo much fun!
Are these apple fritters boozy?
Yes! These apple fritters are a bit boozy. We added bourbon to the dough, which cooks out as it fries (but adds a delicious flavor). However the glaze has bourbon in it—adding a bit of an alcoholic *boozy* treat.
If you prefer to make these treats without bourbon in the glaze, simply leave it out! 🙂
Maple Bourbon Apple Fritters
Description
Maple Bourbon Apple Fritters. A maple bourbon infused dough with chopped apple, cinnamon and topped with maple bourbon glaze.
Ingredients
Maple Bourbon Apple Fritters
3 cup flour
4 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
4 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp nutmeg
1 cup milk
1/2 cup bourbon
4 eggs
2 tbsp maple syrup
4 apples, chopped in small pieces
Maple Bourbon Glaze
1/2 cup maple syrup
1 tbsp milk
2 tbsp bourbon
3 cups powdered sugar
Flaky sea salt (for topping)
Instructions
- Line a plate with paper towels or set up a wire rack and place paper towels below. and set aside. Then, heat a few inches of oil in a large sauce pan on medium-low heat. Wait until the temperature reaches 350°F (we used a candy thermometer to measure this).
- While the oil is heating up, in large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. Set aside to combine the wet ingredients. In a small bowl, whisk together the milk, bourbon, eggs and maple syrup. Stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Once the mixture is just combined, gently fold in the chopped apples.
- Using an ice cream or cupcake scoop, drop the balls of batter into the oil for 4-5 minutes, flipping them over a couple times throughout the process to cook each side evenly. We recommend only cooking 2 apple fritters in the oil at a time. Remove the fritters from the oil and place on wire rack. Repeat this process until you’ve used all the dough.
- While the fritters are slightly cooling, it’s time to make the maple bourbon glaze. Whisk together the maple syrup, milk, bourbon, powdered sugar. Drizzle the glaze over the apple fritters and top with flaky seas salt. Enjoy with a hot cup of coffee or tea!
